The area is beautiful and untouched, not overcrowded by too many tourists, very rural, but with lovely, old cities not far away (Nerac, Condom, Agen) – and a multitude of things one can do in the countryside, forests, lakes and rivers, villages and towns.
There are many vineyards, bright yellow rape plant fields in flower in early spring, then sunflowers everywhere for weeks, lovely early spring times with frogs downs a forest path at the lake and nightingales, hot peaceful summers with nature lush and overabundant, warm and long autumns with an abundance of mushrooms and sweet, edible chestnuts, the weather often pleasant until the end of October or longer.
In summer a small tourist office is open in a mediaeval house by the lovely and ancient, tree-lined market place. During the whole summer the region is brimming with life and the true’ joie the vivre’ of the French.
This is also populated every Wednesday evening by astonishing amounts of lively, mainly French locals appearing from surrounding areas when the market for local delicacies is set up with stands and long, long tables, to accommodate the happy crowd who like all French love to eat, enjoy their wine and company talking animatedly and dancing until late at night. The locals include a number of foreigners (in case you don’t speak French) who live here now, quite a number of them artists, musicians and writers.
Every – even the tiniest village has a big summer fête (village party of the year), so if you wanted you could spend your holiday with a different fête every night!
The contrast between the true peace of nature away from stress and hectic crowds and on the other hand lively entertainment whenever you choose is one of the most striking features a holiday in this region can offer.
Throughout the year a myriad of birds can be heard in the forest and fields, owls and cuckoos during night and day, shy wild boar roam around the house in the night and buck is grazing in front of the windows at dawn or dusk in happy harmony with our ducks and chickens. The air is so healthy that this region has one of the highest life expectancies in Europe, with an average life expectancy for woman of 83!
The winters are very quiet, short and crisp – maybe a little longer and colder now with climate changes but cosy by the fire.
Sos has all basic amenities like bakery, butcher, small supermarket and corner Tobacconist with newspapers and bric-a- brac, even some postcards from the 50s in a forgotten corner of a shelf. Once a week a fresh fish vendor arrives and a vegetable market stand, there is a pharmacy, coffee and evening "bar" (pub) with pool table, 2 restaurants, post office and doctor. All one needs. Read about the great food you can expect to experience in the area.
